Al Puerini, Jr., MD
President & CEO - RI Primary Care Physicians Corp.
Dr. Puerini is a board-certified family physician in private practice for over thirty years in Cranston, R.I. and is the senior member of Family Health & Sports Medicine. Since 1995, he has been President & CEO of R.I. Primary Care Physicians Corporation (RIPCPC). RIPCPC is composed of 150 primary care physicians in the areas of family medicine, pediatrics and internal medicine. Over the past 18 years, he has successfully negotiated innovative contracts in R.I. with multiple payers. These contracts are based on promoting the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and rewarding physicians for the quality of care they provide rather than the number of patients they see or procedures they do. Incentive payments are based on attainment of pre-set clinical goals and shared savings programs with the payer. As a result, RIPCPC has been able to attain significant improvement in overall patient care and outcomes while improving its physician member’s total reimbursement.
As one of the original 5 pilot practices of the Care Transformation Collaborative of RI , Dr. Puerini has been part of a dynamic team that has developed the concept of the Patient Centered Medical Home in over 100 RI medical practices while also designing a new payment model to support primary care offices in the development and deployment of this concept.
He has been the Head Team Physician for Providence College Athletics since 1988 providing care for all PC student athletes in 19 sports.
Lastly, he was recently elected Chairman of the Board of the newly formed ACO, Integra Community Care Network, LLC. The ACO is a ground-breaking partnership between RIPCPC, South County Hospital and Care New England. He is one of Integra’s medical directors.
He is a member the Governor’s Health Care Leadership Committee. He serves on the Boards of the RI Quality Institute, The Care Transformation Collaborative of RI and The Hospital Association of RI.
